The HATCH Difference

So I just got back from HATCH in Bozeman Montana, and this year’s participants and events were outstanding. I had a great time and met some really talented and inspirational people. One of the artists that I had the opportunity to work with was Matt Sullivan, Creative Director from The Difference, a managemant consulting service, where he specializes in graphic capture for team meetings and events. He captured my presentation and panel discussion with the amazing graphic below!! See some of Matt’s other work from HATCH here.

Pumped Up Kicks

I did these renderings for a class photoshop demo today and was pretty psyched about them, so I thought I would post them up here. Snakeskin high-top shoes are the hot new thing apparently. Enjoy.

HATCH Bozeman 2011

I’m very proud to have been invited to speak and participate in HATCH in Bozeman Montana this year. HATCH is an amazing event that will go from Oct. 6-8th 2011 and will consist of a series of films, concerts, panels, keynote speeches, workshops and showcases. I am scheduled to give a talk entitled ‘Designing a Better World,’ on Friday October 7th. If you are in the area I encourage you to stop by and say hi! The list of speakers and participants this year looks really outstanding and I am looking forward to meeting a bunch of really interesting people.

YoungBlood

I have been working on a few new logos and flyers recently and pushing a lot of techniques to try to get a more vintage look to my graphics. I wanted to post up the work I did for my DJ friend Lacey Youngblood. She wanted a similar look to the logo work I had done for Haters Make Us FAMOUS, although my work has evolved a lot since then and I was eager to do everything custom on this one and not use any pre-existing fonts or type treatments.

The original idea was sketched out with pencil and markers and then afterward I began to build the pieces in illustrator. The text for ‘YOUNG’ was pretty straightforward vector work and we went through quite a few variations before we settled on what was ultimately the most readable.

The handwritten ‘blood’ portion of the logo was done with a Tria marker and then scanned. The resulting scan was then livetraced in illustrator and by carefully adjusting the livetrace parameters I was able to give the text the more liquid appearance that we were going for.

Le Fixie

WHEW! Between work, travel, teaching, djing as well as trying to maintain some semblance of a normal social life, I have been all over the place these last couple of months. Despite the busy schedule, I am still developing a super-secret project that is in the works. And this one is gonna be BIG! I expect it will really take off this winter, but here is a little preview. No, it will not be bicycle related, but this IS a bike decal set I am starting. Pretty excited to start some production!

Liam in London

I just got back from a great trip to London last week. I had the opportunity to meet a couple of my favorite artists, Liam Sparkes and Maxime Buechi at Shangri-La Tattoo Parlour. I got some sweet work by Liam and we compared work from Thomas Hooper. I took this photo that Thomas later posted on his webpage.

Haters’ RAGEFEST 2011

Next week Haters Make Us FAMOUS will celebrate RAGEFEST 2011! I have been doing tons of new posters and graphics lately and I am looking forward to sharing more. Just finished this one. Time for a celebratory Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi!

California Raisins x MJ = Infinity Awesome

So, I like the California Raisins, but I freakin LOVE Michael Jackson! And those two elements come together in a magical media moment straight from the 80′s right here!

Seems that there was a 30 sec. version as well as a 60 sec. version. The 30 sec. version is a better rip on YouTube, but the 60 sec. is notable because around the 30 mark they use a sample of the actual Michael Jackson singing his trademark “WOO HOO” sound. Apparently they werent supposed to use the real Michael since he was under contract at the time. Although it makes me wonder about his voice at the end, because that DOES sound legit. Anyway, most of the rest of the singing was sung by Kipp Lennon.

The Gypsy Gentleman

Tattooing means a lot of things to a lot of different people. Tattoos have been worn by warriors and heroes, bikers, criminals, sailors, and street punks. Tattooing has been thought to protect the wearer from evil and it has been used to tell stories about the wearer, denote rank, to remember a loved one, or simply as a form of adornment. But in the past few years, tattooing has grown in popularity. With more and more young people getting tattooed, it has come into the mainstream and is no longer associated solely with the counterculture.

For me, tattooing was always a fascination. I was interested in how tattooing evolved in different cultures, I was interested in the types of people that would choose to cover themselves in tattoos, and I was drawn to the complexity and boldness of the artwork. I had always wanted to get tattooed, but it wasnt until I saw the tattoos on my friend Boris that I thought, ‘I could do this too,’ and I was super-afraid to get a bad tattoo, so I looked at as many artists as I could and studied the history of the art form intensely for about a year or so before even deciding on my first artist. I was drawn to the personalities of the different artists. Their styles and how they were able to travel and see the world. Their lifestyles and inspirations pulled from the same pile as my own. I was inspired to travel to see these artists, I was excited to reconnect with old friends as well as meet new ones on these journeys and I was humbled to receive adornment from a couple of artists whom I consider to be modern masters of their craft. And for me, thats what the art of tattooing is really all about. Its about traveling the world, its about connecting with people, and its about beautiful and timeless artwork.

I could keep going but the point is that there is a lot more to tattooing than what crappy television shows make it out to be, and Marcus Kuhn is out to show whats its really about. His new project, The Gypsy Gentleman is a real life tattoo travel documentary about real people connecting and real artists exploring timeless forms of adornment. The first episode of this video magazine features artists Thomas Hooper and Virginia Elwood in Brooklyn, and it is just so well produced and considered that I had to share it with you here. I feel that this project very accurately captures the spirit of the art form and the lifestyle, and for that it is already a huge success. But the project is only in its beginning phase and Im looking forward to seeing where Marcus goes next!

You can read more about the project and support the integrity of the tattoo industry here.

Foster The People

I dont usually post up much music up on here, but in an attempt to diversify my subject matter, I say let’s do it! Its Saturday. So last Friday my buddy Brandon called me up and asked if I wanted to go to a show at Warehouse Live. $30 a ticket. I didnt have anything better to do and I had never heard of the band, but I thought, what the hell, I’ll go. And this better be a damn good band for $30.

Well you know how it is normally when you go see a band you have never heard? And you’re kind of like ‘eh, I guess they’re okay’. Well thats how I usually am with just about any show. But the reason I am writing about the Foster the People show is because they were actually good and put on an excellent live show as well. I was very impressed and even moved by more than a couple of their songs. Not the same old Strokes-ey, jangley guitar indie stuff, but GOOD catchy songwriting, talented musicians and a lead singer that has a very wide vocal range. Rather than give some cheesy bio of the band, I will post my favorite songs here for you to check out. ALSO, as you all know I DJ a lot, I found an excellent dance remix of their hit, ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ by Gigamesh that is primed for the floor, so check that out as well. In fact, if you havent heard any Gigamesh remixes, check them out, AMAZING!!!!
