Well the time as finally come and after 7 years working on vehicle design at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, I said goodbye this week and I’m off on my next adventure. First stop is Cricket Trailers. I have been involved in a few aspects of the Cricket’s development over the past few years. My friend, principal designer, Garrett Finney was a former member of our design team at NASA and has done an incredible job putting together what may be the lightest, greenest, and certainly the coolest mobile habitat on the road. Its soo light in fact, that it can be towed using the vehicle you already own! I’m really excited to start at Cricket and help Garrett grow the business. Ever since their feature on Travel Channel’s Extreme RV’s, which you can watch here, orders have been blowing up!!! So expect to see Crickets popping up everywhere over the next few months!

We just got copy of the fantastic video that was made by one of our summer interns, Wyatt Little, a couple of years ago when he helped us to build the wooden mockup of NASA’s SEV (Space Exploration Vehicle) Rover. Wyatt was a student of mine at the University of Houston who we brought in for not one, but TWO separate internships with our team, the Habitability Design Center. Wyatt is freakin awesome and was a huge help in making the project a success. The video is short, but very well put together, and offers an inside look at some of the process of designing and developing a new space vehicle cabin. Check it out! I’ll post up more about this project very soon!

I recently began learning to airbrush under one of my old art teachers from when I was a kid, Houston artist Charlie Brown. Charlie is a skilled airbrush artist, designer and technical illustrator who has done work for Nasa, Exxon, Schlumberger, Pennzoil, Compaq Computer, Coca Cola Foods, Minute Maid Orange Juice and lots more. Hes an old-school guy with lots of hilarious stories and I have been learning a lot. I just finished an introductory six weeks of basic exercises, I picked up a couple of Iwata airbrushes on ebay and I have been practicing a ton. I have wanted an Iwata HP-B ever since I was ten years old, and I finally got one! Here is my first practice piece. I messed it up somewhere in there doing the reflections and some masking tape tore up some of the acrylic, so I called it a day. But this is very much in the direction I want to go with my work. I’ll post more here soon!

The space vehicle that I have been most involved with for the last few years, the Space Exploration Vehicle (SEV), is now becoming the Multi-Mission Space Exploration Vehicle or MMSEV. The design approach is that this modular cabin can be reused on either a planetary rover chassis, or a rocket sled for deep space/near earth asteroid (NEA) missions. Our team has worked on many aspects of this vehicles design, but mostly the habitability aspects, such as the finish of the interior, seats, curtains, stowage, etc.

I was surprised that these awesome videos from NASA had so few plays on YouTube. Someone really needs to step up the PR because these missions look so exciting! Below is a CGI video of the MMSEV concept, and below that, astronaut and project lead Mike Gernhardt gives a quick tour of our MMSEV mockup during his 3-day stay in the vehicle.

I just finished this sweet fixed gear bicycle project and I wanted to share with you all. Last fall when I was in London visiting friends, we were walking through Brixton looking at bikes and overheard a French man use the phrase “Le Fixie.” Ever since, we wanted to build Le Fixie. With a little help from the awesome people over at Houston Fixed Gear, I put together a sweet 90′s GT Pulse with the triple-triangle frame. I designed the custom decals and had them printed by the good people at Sticker Robot.

I also have to shout out to Aaron Panone who designed and manufactured the badass track chainring. Aaron has been getting a lot of coverage on Core77 lately for his sweet design work, and I am a huge fan. See details about the bike below.

If you want to get ahold of a LeFixie decal set for your ride, please reference this post and send a paypal payment of $10 to me at evantwyford [at] gmail or stop by and visit the folks at Houston Fixed Gear at 2309 Dunlavy in Houston Texas. Ride safe!

OHH YEAAHHH!!! There are some things from the 80′s that you just cant get away with anymore. Smoking indoors, pants tucked into socks, and of course the 80′s Spin. Not that many people know about the 80′s Spin, but it is something that I have begun to notice more and more while watching vintage movies and commercials from this period. What IS the 80′s Spin?? Well, if you watch closely, you can sometimes spot funloving teenagers do a Michael Jackson-like spin just out of nowhere! Yeah! You know what Im talking about.

So, I dont know where this behavior started and if it was widespread, or just isolated to TV and movie actors, but it eventually branched out into a wide range of other strange motions such as walking backwards, sitting on chairs backwards, jumping in the air and clicking your heels together, and conveying onesself, physically, in an all around squirrelly manner. Makes me want to get some stonewashed denim and a pair of hightops!

This Camaro ad from 1985 is so full of 80′s Spins, its ridiculous. Also see if you can spot the TWO 80′s Spins by Michael J Fox in the Diet Pepsi ad below. If you know of any other great examples of the 80′s Spin, post links in the comments!
