LO-RES Soap

This soap bar is one of my favorite projects. Soap is such an interesting material to work with, I think, because of its unique transformative properties.

I wanted to explore the notion of erosion and how a 3 dimensional form can translate through the added dimensions of time and continued use. The other concept at work in this design is that of de-resolution of 3D information. I wanted the soap bar to look as if it was a low-resolution, ‘pixelated’ 3D object. Through use, the ‘pixels’ would slowly smooth, and the soap would appear in its high-resolution format, complete with the word ‘SOAP’ in it’s surface. I thought that this notion was especially appropriate given that the form was designed and printed using computers. This prototype was cast in real soap from a silicone mold made from a 3D printed FDM model.
